The Ekka (Royal Queensland Show) Brisbane 2017

August 11 @ 8:00 AM - August 20 @ 5:00 PM

$25.60
The Ekka in full swing

The Royal Queensland Show is bigger and older than most. The ‘Ekka’ has aged like a barrel of whisky through its 140 years of bringing the state’s best produce together, now nearing half a million visitors annually and still finer than ever. The Show is a summit for Queensland and Australian agriculture, giving away prestigious awards and holding competitions for the industry’s finest achievers.

Visitors

The Ekka is truly a visitors festival, with more events than any other Queensland show in circulation. The Show’s always been a success too, with its 1876 exhibition attracting 17,000 visitors from a total Brisbane population of 22,000. With its founding roots in the agriculture industry, the 2017 Ekka continues to pitch Australia’s best beef, fruit and vegetable, and dairy farmers against another in heated battle.

The ten day long Show gives produce farmers an opportunity to meet and discuss their industries with other state professionals. The high level of competition within the produce battles also gives farmers an opportunity to see what the industry leaders are capable of achieving. With 21,000 entries being submitted across 42 competition sections, only the certified best will reach the final showgrounds.

While the show is geared towards educating Queenslanders about the agriculture industry, there are plenty of alternative events for the bigger crowds. The Royal Show is so big, attendees could walk around the expansive Brisbane Showgrounds for hours without even noticing it’s an agricultural show (except maybe for the faint smell of livestock). There are rides, showbags, wood chopping competitions, giant fruit and veggies, and an attraction to suit literally anyone.

Exhibitors

The Ekka is a HUGE opportunity for national businesses to expose their products or services to a diverse marketplace. Running over ten days, the Show connects close to 400 individual retailers with 400,000 Queenslanders and Easter holiday revelers. Through surveys the event has measured that the average family spends close to seven hours at the show while forking out nearly $300 each trip.

If you haven’t already registered for this year’s event you’ve missed your chance, but to get in early next year, visit the Royal Queensland Show Website.

Trivia

Ever wondered how the event became known as the Ekka from the Queensland Royal Show? The Aussie twang is to thank. The Queensland vernacular accented an abbreviated form of  “The Exhibition”to “The Ekka” over the decades, somehow making the show even more Aussie than it already was.
