The MotoGP has been the summit for motorcycle racing for nearly 70 years. In 2017 the prestigious motorsport event will return to the Southern Victorian coastline for the Australian leg of the international tour. Taking place on the ocean’s edge, the Phillip Island circuit is one of the most visually stunning tracks on the MotoGP calendar.
Every year fans of the sport and race bikes in general travel across the nation to the Phillip Island event. The track on Phillip Island is steeped in motor racing tradition, operating as a secondary race track since the 1920s before becoming a permanent track in 1956. After becoming dilapidated and weathered, the track was refurbished to the tune of $5million in the mid 80’s and found its permanent place on the MotoGP calendar from 1997 onwards.
The event marks an opportunity for bike enthusiasts to come together and celebrate Australian motorsport. Casey Stoner has represented Australia throughout his GP career, but his success on Phillip Island is testament to the sport’s accommodation down under. Carrying a record six wins and five poles, the track has become Stoner’s backyard, with the third corner being named after the Aussie champ.
