Harvesting may not go smoothly, you may have less grain yield (and quality) and therefore less product and profit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why it\u2019s important to know the different types of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.machines4u.com.au\/browse\/farm-machinery\/headers-harvesters-42\/header-4750\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combine headers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and which best suits your application\/crop. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally it\u2019s easy to identify the right one thanks to how OEMs segment their products. But sometimes, things can get a bit confusing. So we\u2019ve taken the time to talk about different types of combine headers and which suit different crops. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below, we have identified the most common headers and their terminologies. Some OEMs mix and match header types to create unique headers with different attributes on the field (such as flex and rigid, draper and auger, etc.). <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Combine Header Types:<\/b><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#roundup1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grain headers<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#roundup2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corn headers<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#roundup3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunflower headers<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#roundup4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick-up headers<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#roundup5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flex header &amp; platform<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#roundup6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Draper headers<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#roundup7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dummy heads<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#roundup8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auger header &amp; platform<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Difference Between a Combine &amp; Header<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest difference between a combine and a header is that the combine is the main piece of machinery that cleans and collects the grain\/crop. While the header is the attachment on the front (or pulled from the back) that cuts and feeds the crop into the combine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headers come in all shapes and sizes, and are built for different purposes. See below for some clarity on these combine header\u00a0types and what they\u2019re used for.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"roundup1\"><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Grain Headers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grain headers are often called draper or \u2018wheat\u2019 headers (see below). These headers use a canvas-style rolling platform belt to catch crop from the sickle bar. The crop is then fed to the combine for cleaning and separating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suitable for crops like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beans<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheat &amp; grain crops<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"roundup2\"><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. They have cones that stick out like large spikes, which fit neatly between crop rows. Between the spikes (or \u2018snouts\u2019) there are gathering chains that pull the stalks back and snap\/cut the stalks by 2 snap knife rolls. The stalks fall from the machine onto the ground and the heads are fed back into the auger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The auger at the back of the header will pull the corn into the feeder house of the combine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suitable for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corn crops<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soybeans<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other row crops where the stalks aren\u2019t required for processing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"roundup3\"><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Sunflower Headers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A more specialised header, combine headers for sunflowers greatly resemble corn or \u2018row\u2019 headers. Usually, sunflower trays fit to the cutter bar to keep the heads and seeds in the header front, while a head snatcher helps speed up harvest and optimises grain samples. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"roundup4\"><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. The tines (long, finger-like rakes) on the pick-up header collect the crop and transfer it to the belts to feed to the auger. The auger then feeds the crop into the combine harvester. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideal for crops such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grains<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canola<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beans<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lentils<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grass seeds<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"roundup5\"><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Flex Platform Headers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flex headers are able to flex over uneven ground. Generally they have guards that protect the knives that cut the crop, this helps minimise the chance of picking up rocks and other materials. Some combine their flex platform with draper headers for a more efficient harvest. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideal for harvesting on rough or uneven ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"roundup6\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"roundup9\"><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. When the machine is running, the belts feed crop to the centre belt, which goes into the combine and separates the grain from the rest of the crop. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference between a draper header and a conventional auger header, is that a conventional header would have a long auger with a stainless steel floor that would then feed the crop to the centre, rather than a belt. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The draper ensures even feeding (no pinching or slugging) to the combine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideal for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheat crops<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grain crops<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peas &amp; beans<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"roundup7\"><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Dummy Headers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dummy header is fairly similar to pick-up headers (see above). Dummy headers attach to a heavy rubber belt, and pick up crops that are cut and placed in windrows.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"roundup8\"><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. They have a large-diameter horizontal auger that feeds the crop material from the cutterbar into the auger table.
