On major infrastructure projects, managing the interaction between people and mobile plant remains a critical safety challenge. As worksites become more complex, technology is providing operators with greater visibility and situational awareness around the machine.<\/p>\n

A recent visit to Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) Glen Waverley project, provided a practical example. Operating onsite was a Kobelco SK225SR-7 excavator equipped with an integrated suite of machine, safety and positioning technologies.<\/p>\n

The excavator is one of 10 SK225SR-7s ordered by Focus Machinery from Melbourne Tractors. The package reflects a broader shift in how plant is being specified for major infrastructure projects: considering the equipment, technology and safety requirements as one complete solution before the machine reaches site.<\/p>\n

That approach is particularly relevant on confined infrastructure sites, where excavators, drill rigs, trucks, support plant and ground crews can operate within closely managed work zones.<\/p>\n

Integrated Camera, GPS and AI Safety Technology<\/strong><\/h3>\n


The Kobelco package combines the factory-fitted Eagle Eye camera system with GPS and integrated payload scales by Aptella, alongside AI-powered pedestrian detection technology designed to identify personnel within the excavator\u2019s operating area and alert the operator.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese systems don\u2019t replace competent operators, exclusion zones, traffic management plans or the site <\/em>controls already in place,\u201d Jerry Nipper, Managing Director of Focus Machinery, said. \u201cWhat they do is give <\/em>the operator another layer of information – so the decision they\u2019re making is a better-informed one.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

For Focus Machinery, the technology is only one part of the specification. The process starts with understanding what the project needs the equipment to achieve, then defining the complete package required to support that outcome.<\/p>\n

For contractors working to demanding infrastructure schedules, that preparation has a practical benefit. Several machines from the order were able to leave the yard and enter operation the following day, with the required technology and safety systems already in place.<\/p>\n
