machines4u Cookie Policy
This policy sets out how Machines4U Pty Ltd (“machines4u”), which is a subsidiary and part of the carsales.com.au Pty Ltd group of companies (together, the “carsales network”), uses cookies and similar technologies on www.machines4u.com.au and the seller and dealer portals accessed through it. It should be read together with our Privacy Policy, which explains more broadly how we handle, store, use and collect personal information.
What are cookies and how are they used?
A cookie is data sent from a website and stored on the user’s computer by the user’s web browser. The cookie is stored for a period of time.
machines4u (and the carsales network) use cookies for the following purposes:
- Functional — to perform helpful functions, for example remembering listings you have recently viewed.
- Authentication — to allow machines4u to “remember” that you logged in and to provide member and seller functions.
- Analytical — to allow us to analyse how the marketplace is used so that we can improve it. We store information such as IP address and device identifiers for our internal business insights.
- Advertising — to allow us and third party advertisers to track your browsing behaviour across the site and serve advertising based on that behaviour.
- Marketing — to adjust our marketing to user interests, to report on the success of campaigns, and to respond to and follow up enquiries you make about machinery.
Interest-based advertising
Interest based advertising means using behavioural information about a person online to show them advertising more likely to be of interest to them. It does not mean that you receive more advertising — just that what you see is more likely to be relevant. For example, if you are browsing excavators with cookies enabled, we may serve you an excavator advertisement where you would otherwise have seen an advertisement for a truck.
The information we collect via cookies may be linked to other information we (or other carsales network companies) hold about you, building a profile of your browsing, enquiry and other activities. This data may be used to provide personalised offers, marketing and advertising, including advertising across devices linked to the same IP address, or by third parties. Data may be shared with advertisers for these purposes.
We may partner with third parties that collect information across various channels, including offline and online, for the purpose of delivering more relevant advertising to you. Our partners use this information to recognise you across different channels and platforms over time for advertising, analytics, attribution and reporting purposes. For example, our partners may deliver an ad to you in your web browser based on a purchase you made in a physical retail store. Cookie data and other data may be sold, licensed or otherwise provided to third parties via advertising exchanges or other data sharing platforms for this purpose.
Your cookie options
You can change your cookie preferences for all websites by changing your browser settings. Most browsers automatically accept cookies so you may need to actively delete or block the cookies: www.allaboutcookies.org provides some instructions.
If you reject the use of cookies, some of our functions may not work properly. If you continue to use our website without deleting or rejecting cookies, we may place these cookies on your device.
If you don’t want to block all cookies, you can opt out of most personalised online advertising via http://www.aboutads.info/choices and http://networkadvertising.org/. These opt outs are device-specific, so remember to do it from all of your devices. These methods also rely on the use of “opt out” cookies themselves — so remember that if you reset your cookies or use a browser such as Safari which blocks third party cookies, your opt out preferences can’t be “seen”.
None of the actions above will prevent contextual advertising — this is the serving of adverts which best suit the context of the type of website you are visiting e.g. if you click on an editorial piece reviewing SUVs, you are more likely to see SUV adverts on that page.
The actions above also do not prevent the use of advertising-specific device identifiers (for Android devices) and Advertising Identifiers (for Apple devices). For information about how to reset these identifiers, and other usage information, please contact your device manufacturer.
Our own cookies
Some cookies are set by machines4u directly rather than by a third party. These keep you signed in and record your cookie preferences. We also operate a measurement service on our own subdomain which assigns an identifier used to attribute enquiries to the advertising that generated them; although it is set by us, it is used for advertising measurement rather than to operate the site, and is treated as an advertising technology in this policy.
Third party cookie providers
machines4u uses a number of third party service providers. This section provides specific information relating to the main providers, the function of these cookies and where you can learn more.
| Third party cookie | What is collected? | How does machines4u use this? | More info / opt out? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics | Records visitor behaviour on machines4u — pages and listings viewed, searches run, how you arrived at the site, and technical information such as IP address, device and browser. | Used to understand how the marketplace is used and to make improvements. Also used together with advertising cookies to measure which advertising leads to enquiries. | Opt out: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout/ How Google uses data: https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites |
| Ipsos iris (including DotMetrics) | Records visits and time spent on sections of machines4u, together with device and browser characteristics used to recognise a device across visits. | machines4u is tagged for Ipsos iris, the audience measurement standard endorsed by IAB Australia. It produces industry audience figures for the site, which are used by advertisers and agencies when planning campaigns. Ipsos and DotMetrics use the data for that industry study in their own right, not only on our behalf. | Site-centric privacy notice: https://iris-au.ipsos.com/site-centric-privacy/ |
| Qualtrics | Records whether you have been shown or completed an on-site survey, and your responses if you choose to participate. | Runs satisfaction surveys and feedback prompts, and prevents the same survey being shown to you repeatedly. | Privacy statement: https://www.qualtrics.com/privacy-statement/ |
| Google Ads and Google Marketing Platform (including DoubleClick) | Records user activity on machines4u, and the advertising click that brought you here. | Used to target advertising, report on campaign performance, avoid repeating the same advertisement, and attribute enquiries back to the advertising that generated them. | Ad settings: https://myadcenter.google.com/ Opt out: https://support.google.com/ads/answer/2662922 |
| Meta (Facebook and Instagram) | Records user actions on machines4u, including listings viewed and enquiries submitted. Where enabled, Meta also receives a scrambled (hashed) version of contact details you have given us so it can match you to an account. | Enables machinery advertising to be shown to you on Facebook and Instagram based on what you viewed here, and measures whether that advertising leads to enquiries. | Ad preferences: https://accountscenter.facebook.com/ad_preferences More info: https://www.facebook.com/help/568137493302217 |
| Criteo | Records which listings and categories you viewed on machines4u, and matches your browser to Criteo’s advertising network across other sites. | Shows you advertising for machinery similar to what you viewed here when you visit other websites. | Privacy portal: https://privacy.criteo.com/ Opt out: https://www.criteo.com/privacy/disable-criteo-services-on-internet-browsers/ |
| Microsoft Advertising (Bing) | Records user actions on machines4u once a Microsoft or Bing advertisement is clicked. | Allows analysis of Microsoft advertising performance and remarketing to visitors who have been to the site. | Ad settings: https://account.microsoft.com/privacy/ad-settings |
| YouTube (via Google) | Records video playback preferences and which videos you watch on our listing pages. | Delivers seller video embedded in listings, remembers playback settings, and measures viewing. | Privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy |
| HubSpot | Records the pages, listings and searches you view across visits, and the details you enter into enquiry and contact forms. HubSpot’s scripts are delivered through a content delivery network which also sets a short-lived cookie to distinguish people from automated traffic. | When you submit an enquiry, links your browsing history on this site to your contact record so that we and the advertising seller can respond to you, and so our team can follow up. Also used for lead scoring and sales prioritisation. | Privacy policy: https://legal.hubspot.com/privacy-policy Cookie information: https://legal.hubspot.com/cookie-policy |
| Braze | Assigns a device identifier and records your on-site behaviour, including listings and categories viewed. | Links your activity to a marketing profile used to send you relevant email, push and on-site messages about machinery and marketplace features. | Privacy policy: https://www.braze.com/company/privacy |
| ZoomInfo | Records your IP address and behaviour on the site and matches them against ZoomInfo’s business database to identify the organisation you are browsing from, and in some cases an individual associated with it. | Helps our sales team identify businesses that may be interested in advertising machinery with us, and to prioritise follow-up. This is business-to-business identification; it is not used to build a profile of you as a private individual. | Privacy and removal requests: https://www.zoominfo.com/trust-center/your-privacy |
