Microwave Technology in Timber Processing: An Innovative Approach

Presented by Misal Technologies

Misal Technologies is an industry leader in advanced microwave solutions for timber processing. The established engineering company has been operating in Australia since 1980 and is revolutionising the timber industry with their innovative microwave technology for processing timber.

By using cutting-edge scientific research, Misal Technologies approach not only improves the quality of wood but also supports sustainable forestry by maximising the usability of lower-grade timber.

What is Microwave Technology?

Microwave technology uses intensive microwave energy to heat and modify materials. In the timber industry, this technology enhances wood properties by improving permeability, durability, and strength.

How Does Microwave Timber Processing Work?

Timber processing involves a 3-step process which works as follows:

  1. Microwave Treatment: Freshly cut timber is exposed to intense microwaves, heating the water inside the wood cells. This process creates tiny cavities in the wood, increasing its permeability, and dries the timber simultaneously.
  2. Impregnation: The treated timber is soaked in a bath containing preservatives, resins, or fire-retardant solutions. Due to the increased permeability, these substances are absorbed more effectively.
  3. Drying and Curing: The timber is air-dried after soaking. If resins are used, they harden during this phase, solidifying the enhancements within the wood.

Benefits of Microwave Timber Processing

This unique and innovative method of processing timber offers flexibility to product designers as they can produce particular products to match specific applications.

Just some of the benefits of this process include:

  • Enhanced Durability: Deep penetration of preservatives extends the wood’s lifespan and resistance to environmental damage.
  • Improved Strength: Compressing the treated wood can increase its strength, making it comparable to high-grade timber.
  • Versatility: The method allows for the transformation of lower-quality hardwoods into valuable products, reducing the need for expensive or rare timber.

Misal Technologies is seeking commercial partners or large independent investors interested in the commercialisation of this venture.

They can supply turnkey microwave processing plants specifically designed for a range of capabilities including for pre-treatment of rapid hardwood timber drying.
