What Is the 10-Year Major Inspection?
This inspection is a mandatory, comprehensive overhaul of all EWP's, Crane Borers and Vehicle Loading Cranes (VLC's) once it reaches 10 years from its manufacture or compliance date. It’s designed to ensure the machine remains safe and structurally sound for continued operation.
• Required by Australian Standard AS 2550.10 and Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations
• Must be repeated every 5 years after the initial 10-year inspection.
What Does the Inspection Involve?
The process is extensive and must be carried out by qualified technicians. It typically includes:
- Full disassembly of the EWP
- Non-destructive testing of structural components (e.g., welds, steelwork)
- Inspection for fatigue, corrosion, and wear
- Cleaning and reassembly
- Issuance of a compliance plate and Major Inspection certification
- A detailed report documenting findings and any repairs made
Why Is It Mandatory?
The goal is to mitigate risks associated with working at heights and ensure long-term safety:
• Prevent catastrophic failures due to hidden structural issues
• Comply with legal obligations under WHS laws
• Extend the lifespan of the equipment
• Protect workers and property
Who’s Responsible?
• Owners and operators of EWPs are responsible for ensuring inspections are completed
• Failure to comply can result in legal penalties and insurance issues
