2006 Sumitomo SH290-3 excavator – only 2,000 genuine hours from new
Major upgrades:
Original counterweight removed and replaced with a dedicated secondary 450 hp Mercedes diesel engine + high-flow hydraulic pump
This second engine is 100 % dedicated to driving the attachment (currently a massive stump-grinding head)
Rear (auxiliary) engine has done approximately 1,500 hours
Performance:
Devours a 600 mm diameter stump in ~60 seconds
A 400 mm stump disappears in ~20 seconds
Can clear large areas in a single 8-hour day
Also excellent for smashing and processing slash piles (within reason)
Background:
Originally built at a cost exceeding NZD $1 million. The machine sat largely idle in Rotorua for many years after forestry-conversion subsidies ended. It has since been completely re-engineered into a far more powerful, efficient, and operator-friendly unit than the original concept.
