In 1984 Richard Darcey began Midland Tractors in a rented shed in Brighton, approximately 20km north of Hobart. He was the John Deere Agricultural dealer for southern Tasmania. Being a one man operation he would complete spare parts and office duties in the mornings, closing the shop early afternoon to carry out field service or visit customers with sales enquiries.
